In honor of tax month, we looked at the breakdown of state and local tax revenue to see how California compares to other states. Of the categories shown in the figure below, the majority of state and local revenue in California comes from the individual income tax, followed by sales and use taxes, a modest base of property tax, and lastly corporate taxes.
California falls in the middle of state rankings when looking at how income, corporate, sales, and property tax compare to total state and local revenue. California state and local governments are also less reliant on property tax and sales tax compared to other states, and individual income tax makes up a larger proportion of state and local revenue in the Golden State.
